The Penalty of Luis Fernandez - WC 86

The 21^st of June, 1986 France faced Brazil during the World Cup quarterfinal in the Jalisco de Guadalajara stadium.

This match which remained carved in the French supporters‘ memory was epitomized in the person of Luis Fernandez. As the number 9^th he scored after the last penalty and released the French Blues at the end of a tight game.

The photographer Henri Szwarc captured Fernandez’s walk just before his penalty kick. Under unbearable heat he leaves water flowing on his head. In the background we can distinguish the forward Julio César as well as the Brazilian goalkeeper Carlos.
